George Long Jr.
Chief Deputy
George Long began his career in 1997 with the US Army by volunteering for the Airborne Division. Where he gained education, awards and certifications including Airborne Jump Wings, Expert Infantry Badge and, Expert Marksmanship Badge. But Long began his Law Enforcement Career here in Coosa County were in September of 2000 he was hired by the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Deputy. He graduated from the Montgomery Police Academy in April 2001 and began working on night shift serving civil papers, arrest warrants and answering calls for service. He attended the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy for T/CAP Criminal Patrol and Basic Narcotics Investigations.
In January of 2003, Long left Coosa County and went to Alexander City Police Department. He worked day shift and got to work with Criminal Investigators and Investigators from the Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force. Long in July of 2004 was transferred to the Detective Division assigned as a Narcotics Detective to the Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force.
In October 2006, Long spent 12 months working for DynCorp on the Iraq Police Mission assigned to FOB Warhorse as an International Police Advisor where he was tasked with the training, mentoring, advising and supplying of the Iraqi Police Department in the city of Baqubah Region of Tikrit, Iraq.
In November 2007, and came back to the Alexander City Police Department. Long received the awards for Officer of the Second Quarter, Combat Cross, SRG Citation and Shift Citation. In 2009, Alexander City Police Department initiated a new unit, Crime Interdiction Task Force (C.I.T.F.) where he was assigned as Assistant Team Leader. The C.I.T.F. was designed to combat street level crime and assist the Narcotics Task Force, Criminal Investigations and serve High priority and felony warrants.
After a year working on C.I.T.F., George Long went to work for Armor Group North America at the US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan serving as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) / DDM Designated Defensive Marksman. After finishing this deployment,he returned to the Coosa County Sheriff's Office in 2010 as a Patrol Deputy then as Narcotics Investigator. In 2011 Long returned to the Alexander City Police Department and in 2012 was assigned to the Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force and the Team Leader for the Special Response Group (SRG). In 2014, he transferred into the Criminal Detective Division and was there for five years.
Long has once again returned to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office in January 2019 as Chief Deputy. He looks forward to serving the citizens of Coosa County and utilizing his training to serve the county where he was raised.
